When I was a kid my dad had a 51 Ford pickup truck with a broken gas
gauge. He didn't have a written checklist, but every time he drove the
truck he put $1 worth of gas in it. (the good old days)
One day he couldn't get the whole $1 in.

If you asked for a dollars worth of gas today the guy would just fart
in your window ... there you go!

I worked in a gas station my senior year of high school. Kids would come
in and pool their money to get 30-50 cents worth of gas. Enough for the
evening. 21-29 cents a gallon.

When I was in college I'd frequently double date with some friends of
ours. The other guy and I would each pitch in 50 cents for gas money.
That was good for 3 or 4 gallons, 50 or 60 miles with my old 1958 Ford
6 cylinder. That Ford was the least expensive car I've ever owned. I
bought it in the summer of 1965 for $260, drove it 20,000 miles, and
sold it a year later for $230.
