When I was a kid my dad had a 51 Ford pickup truck with a broken gas
gauge. He didn't have a written checklist, but every time he drove the
truck he put $1 worth of gas in it. (the good old days)
One day he couldn't get the whole $1 in.

If you asked for a dollars worth of gas today the guy would just fart
in your window ... there you go!

I worked in a gas station my senior year of high school. Kids would come
in and pool their money to get 30-50 cents worth of gas. Enough for the
evening. 21-29 cents a gallon.

We usually went for a dollars worth of Scot gas to fill up pop's car.
He never paid any attention to the odometer but he did notice the gas
gauge.
My buddy's dad did monitor the odometer so we just disconnected it
when we got to where we were supposed to be going and hooked it back
up when we were about that far from home.
