I lived in DC for 38 years, went to school downtown for 5 and went to
a few big events but not many. The fireworks trick used to be to rent
a canoe down there near the wharf and paddle down a ways. The
fireworks are better on the water anyway. If you went around the south
side you missed most of the traffic going in and you paddled up to 3
sisters to wait out the traffic going out. I think midnight was the
cut off for returning the canoe.
We did the boat thing in a 15' Whaler. Loads of fun. Daughter had a great time in her little raft
paddling around all the other boats. We'd come up from Ft. Belvoir.
But, all good things come to an end, and we had to take the boat back to Ft. Belvoir. Keep in mind
that the captains of all these 35'ers had been guzzling beer all day! I was never as afraid on a
boat as I was on that cruise back to Ft. Belvoir. Once was plenty.
That is why we went up toward 3 sisters. Boat guys are not coming up
there very often after dark.
We did the trip down from Ft Washington once in a 17' runabout but it
was not all that much fun.
