A screw-up in how covid-19 confirmed cases in Massachusetts
has been discovered and it may not be exclusive to to
Massachusetts. It is suspected as happening nation-wide
because of how the cases are being reported.
Here's an example of what has happened:
Someone develops symptoms but is otherwise healthy and
not at high risk. The person tests positive for the
virus and is told to self-quarantine in isolation
at home for 14 days.
Confirmed case #1 is reported via state health departments
to the CDC.
After 14 days of self-quarantine person is not better.
Tests again positive for covid-19.
Confirmed case #2 is reported because the reporting
system is based on *tests*.
Person in self-quarantine gets worse and
is admitted to a local hospital for treatment and monitoring.
Confirmed case #3 is reported.
Person is transferred to another hospital that is
better equipped for covid-19 cases.
Confirmed case #4 is reported.
This is an example of how the confirmed case numbers
may be way off the actual numbers. In this example
one confirmed case ended up being counted as four.
