My Ratheon CL70 radar system (5 years old, approx. 4,000 hours of
usage) showed the following malfunction: When I would change the
range from 3 to 6 miles and vice versa, the screen would go blank for
from 3 to 5 minutes. Upon inspection, the local Raymarine rep. said
that the antenna drive belt was seriously deteriorated and was
failing. While I accept that the belt was bad, does changing the
range have any impact on the drive belt? Any suggestions as to other
possible causes of this malfunction. Thanks, Steve L.
I'm pretty certain these units run at a constant speed but the belt
could, if it's slipping, cause the unit to malfunction (lose synch) when
you change the range.
It's probably best to eliminate the known belt problem and see what
happens. The other option is to call the folks at Raymarine tech
support. They're pretty helpful in diagnosing problems.
They helped me trace a problem down to a mosfet chip that cost me $2 and
a little soldering to replace on my own. Saved me lots of time and
money.
