My water was coming out of only one side, starboard, for a couple weeks.
The
mechanic at the marina said 'twas no big deal. Then my starboard exhaust
hose
started burning on me while out on the water. Had holes in the exhaust
hose.
Turns out the riser was plugged.

Take off the manifolds and risers and check them out. If the manifolds
and
risers haven't been replaced in 11 years, you've been lucky. Mine lasted
7
in
the Chesapeake Bay. Most folks say 10 years is max for fresh water.

Don't wait for a bigger problem to develop!

I know that one manifold was replaced last year. but the problem side one
hasn't. Now if i take the Exhaust elbow off how do i know if it is "bad"
i
know when i have taken the hoses off it is very brigth orange/rust color..
any suggestions or sites? I would like to try and do this myself because
my
local marine takes forever this time of year...


It's hard to believe that someone would replace one manifold and riser and
not
the other set, especially after 10 years. If I were you, I'd just order
the
parts and replace the manifold and riser on the bad side. Once my manifold
and
riser were off, I couldn't see a 'plug', but no water was coming through!

After replacing the parts water was coming through the exhaust. Try
feeling the
risers while the engine is running. If one feels much hotter than the
other,
then that's where your problem is. You should be able to place your hands
on
both without getting burned.

Well, now you've got me stumped. If no water is coming thru the exhaust, then
I'm wondering what is keeping the riser cool. Are you letting the engine get to
operating temp?

I don't know. Hopefully some of the able mechanics in the group will have some
more advice. Me, I'd be taking the manifold and riser off. Replacing them can be
done by yourself, but it's easier if someone holds the manifold while you get
the bolts started. I tied a piece of rope around it, wrapped the rope around my
neck and raised and lowered my back to move the manifold up and down.
Cumbersome, but it worked.
