I've got a 162. All good advice from Matt.

Also:

Leave it powered up with a good view of the sky for a couple of hours.
Sometimes
when they have an outdated almanac, it takes a long time to lock in. Once
it locks
in leave it on another couple hours so it can downloand a fresh almanac.

Download the latest firmware. You can get it from Garmin's website.

Easier than borrowing another antenna is to take your unit to the other
antenna.

Cliff,

I would immediately be somewhat suspect of the prior owner's remark as
that munber has been discontinued for a couple of years.

I am going to take it for granted that you have looked over the manual.

If it never shows any bars on the status screen, look over the antenna
cable carefully. If you can barrow another remote antenna, you could
contirn that this is/is not an issue.

Then, inspect the BNC connector at the rear of the unit, this is often the
problem. If the cable pulls out - you got it.

That all looks good? Look down the entire length of the cable for where
it was damaged. If it was crushed, try rolling it round before you
replace the cable and see it bars come on.

I recently purchased a boat that included the GPSMAP162.
the guy i bought the boat from said that the unit was just out of the
box.
i cannot seem to locate any satalites.
it has an external antenna mounted to a pole on the gunnel of the boat.
please, any suggestions on what i might check.
