I have the opportunity to make an offer on a colvic sailer 29' 9"
moulded in 1980 but never completed.
Do you want to sail, or to build a boat?
The details are below as to whats included in the sale and what state
the boat is in. The big question is - How much should I offer for it,
and how much (ballpark figure) might it cost to finish it.
Well, how much did it cost new, on the dealer's lot in 1981 (subtracting
mark-up)? That's how much it's going to cost to finish it.
It sounds like the boat was stored carefully, but time kills. I'd bet
that half the included stuff is worthless, and more than half is going
to be obsolete. The amount of labor to install the engine, plumbing,
wiring, deck hardware, etc etc is staggering... building the hull & deck
is usually reckoned at about 15% of the labor involved in finishing the
boat.
I'd suggest making an offer based on the prices of a few of the same
boat on the used market... cut it in half, at least. It sounds like you
really really want to build a boat and see this as a good jumping-off
point... which it is... but in the absence of somebody with boatbuilding
fever, the owner is going to have to pay somebody to haul it off.
