I'll tell you the auto mechanic's trick for checking a choked exhaust
(i.e cat converter). He will open an aperture - like a converter
oxygen sensor - removing it makes a hole - noisy but allows him
to tell if the engine then runs better....

For a boat engine - you need to decide what can be temporarily opened
up.
