John, please don't give advice if you don't know what you're talking
about. Dpreview is a good site for many things, but they're reviews of
P&S cameras are laughable.
Here's a DPreview sample "cons" for the Nikon 5200:
Images look soft (though they respond well to unsharp masking)
Images can be over-contrasty - muddy shadows (again, the detail is
there but needs fixing in Photoshop)
Occasional focus problems at the long end of the zoom
Finest quality JPEG is still quite heavily compressed
Then they conclude:
The Coolpix 5200 is a little gem of a camera that proves Nikon is not
merely dabbling in consumer-level cameras.
Oh boy. No mention of the fact that the 5200 has an AF illuminator with
a 4 foot range! No mention that the Coolpix is actually a Sanyo! The
5200 and the newest models from Nikon can't focus worth a damn. Sony
and Canon share the same problems with SOME models. Dpreview will not
bash a bad camera in most cases.
Steve's Digital is a bit better, but user reviews are still the best
defense...some on Amazon, Cnet and Epinions.
