The Bigger Cockpit
My cockpit has a drop-in board for the wheel 'cut-out' , if
you remove the wheel you can drop the board in and it
becomes one long seat, about 8' long.
Scotty, it ain't the size of your cockpit, it's how you use
it.

It's so easy to crush poor Bob Crantz...let's take a look
at the 35s5
and it's EXACT measurements against some other good
cockpits.
The Tartan 37 is a larger yacht with a very good amount of
cockpit
space. Anyone who's sailed one knows the cockpit seats 5-6
adults with
no problem. From bridgedeck to helm seat back it measures
exactly 8
feet X 5 feet wide. You CAN'T lie down because the seat
stops for the
wheel and resumes at the helm seat. Removing the wheel
does nothing to
help here.
The Catalina 36 is a larger yacht with the same cockpit
shape as the
Tartan 37. You can't lie down. Most people feel the
Catalina's 7'6
cockpit which is also 5'5 wide is generous.
The Catalina 42 is a much larger yacht with a huge cockpit
that
measures 8'5 feet long. Still, it has seats that end for
the wheel
again. With it's large coamings and seat depth of 17
inches, the 42 has
lots of room.
The Beneteau First 35s5 cockpit measures 7 feet from
bridgedeck to helm
seat back. It's also 5'9 wide and has the same seat depth
as the
Catalina 42. Unlike the other boats, the cockpit seat runs
the length
of the cockpit. The coamings of the 35s5 provide
additional seating are
great and are matched only by the Catalina 42, but it's
still nicer to
lie down in the 35s5. Pop the wheel off at anchor and you
really have
room to sleep.
Hunter 35...a new boat has a cockpit measuring 7'2 X 5'10,
about the
same size as the 35s5 cockpit.
The 1990 Ericson 34 has a cockpit measuring 6'7, the
Sweden 39 measures
7 feet and has seats just 14 inches deep. The C&C 34 is
also 7 feet and
has very short seats, just like my old C&C 32 which still
handled 6
people no problem.
So much for anyone ever claiming the 35s5 cockpit is
small. It's
average by strict dimensions, but combined with it's
clever design
actually does better than many others.
Sorry, Bob Crantz. The facts just kicked you in the rubber
parts....AGAIN!!!!
