"Everything should be discussed openly", so why is Obama trying to
legally silence those who ask about his relationship with Bill Ayers,
how open is that? Can we trust a party that says they want open
discussion and then uses the legal system to silence their
questioners?

Ayers was never convicted of a crime.

Further, generally, the anti-war protesters of the Vietnam War era were
the ones on the correct side. Generally, because I'm a Martin Luther
King kind of protester, non-violent above all, and I didn't appreciate
any anti-Vietnam war protests that physically hurt anyone.

He wasn't convicted because of a legal technicality. But, he
acknowledged to the New York Times (in 2001),
"I don't regret setting bombs...I feel we didn't do enough."

I'm aware of the details, and, as I stated, I was a non-violent protester,
and still am.

I am sure you are, but you happened to leave the details out of your post.
I just added them for clarity, you see.
Sorta changes the dude's image.
