Amazing, one of the Constitutional duties of the federal government is
looked upon as a jobs program.
What our DoD is doing goes far beyond defending our borders.
Nobody we have been at war with since 1945 has attacked or even
threatened to attack the US.
Before you start throwing 9-11 at me, remember virtually everyone
involved in 9-11 was Saudi and most of the planning was done in
Europe. The critical training was done in the US.
I was planning on enlisting once the Viet Cong invaded Topeka but then I
thought about it some more and concluded that Topeka might be a better
place if it were run by the Viet Cong.
I had actually enlisted before most people thought the Viet Cong were
ever going to be a problem. After all, hadn't we just elected LBJ who
was the peace candidate? I enlisted so I could call my shot and not be
drafted into the Sargent Bilko army, painting rocks white in front of
an officer's club in Fumbuck Arkansas.
I got some alleged Chinese food in Topeka in the mid-1960's, and
the Chinese noodles were actual strands of spaghetti.
Asian food in Kansas? Isn't that like trying to get decent Italian
food south of exit 12 on the Jersey Turnpike?
Actually there are enough snowbirds to find decent gravy in Florida
but you have to look for it. I stumbled into a great place right
before you go over the bridge in Clearwater Beach at the end of a
little strip mall.
We actually have a really good Italian restaurant nearby, run by an
actual Italian family from Italy. Best pizza outside of Pepe's in New
Haven, and really terrific Italian seafood and pasta dishes.
I was in Topeka with my girlfriend back then, a nice red-headed lass
whose family lived in Topeka. Her parents weren't too upset by the fact
that their daughter was hooked up with me, a strange guy from "the
East." Because of her, I got into journalism, which was her major. I
took a few courses in the j-school, alongside my English/Soc double major.
Anyway, she took me to a Chinese restaurant. What did I know? Most of it
tasted like Chinese fast food, but I wasn't about to tell her that.
i also joined for 25 cents a bottle club. Life member for a quarter.
Probably long gone, since Kansas now serves hard liquor by the drink.
