Hello all.
I have a Motorola 3 watt bag that works great, but the antenna
connector that was soldered to the inside of the chasis came loose
inside. This is okay though, as I was looking for a way to connect the
phone to the boats fat 9/16 inch antenna adapter anyways.
Not a good idea. Your boat antenna was designed for the 160 mhz area
assuming it was made for VHF, or 2 mhz if it was made for SSB marine.
I don't know the the types of antennas, but I have 3 devices (with
different antennas) that i'd like to connect to boats antenna.
The first is hand held VHF radio - made by humminbird model vhf5
platinum. It's antenna unscrews off. The male stub is about 3/8 inch
in diameter.
It could be an SMC or other connector. Can you take a digital picture and
either post it online somewhere or send it to me? It could also be a BNC
(normal connector on many handhelds). A BNC connector, doesn't really
screw on, though, it is more like a bayonet fitting.
The second, is the bag phone who has no antenna, but the whole for an
antenna adapter will only allow a connector about the size of the hand
held uhf radio. The male stub the phone originally looked like the
size of the uhf handheld , is actually smaller at 5/16 inch in
diameter. On this device, I need to be able to fasten the adapter to
the devices chasis with nuts on each side.
Bag phone should not be connected to marine antenna. You could wire it to
a cellular antenna.
The third, is my cell phone, a v120c Motorola. Not sure if this will
work, but i'd like to try connecting my cell to the boat's antenna to
see if signal improves out at sea. The antenna on the phone actually
broke off - though it works phone. The male stub, which can't be
screwed onto, is 1/4 inch in diameter.
Again, use a cellular antenna. The higher you can locate it, the better it
will work.
The boats antenna connector is a female that connects to a 9/16 inch
male stub (on radio) - i think this is the standard boat VHF antenna
female connector.
Pretty sure this is an SO-239. The plug which connects to it is called a
PL-259. That solders directly to RG 8U coax. For thinner coaxes, like
RG-58U, there are adapters which screw into the back of the plug.
Anybody know where I might find these adapters? and what their
official names / dimensions are.
Many thanks for any help or information.
