Most people have sense enough to do that. Actually stopping over a few

Not a horrible idea. Come in late, do a next day hike in the Muir
woods and get out early the next day
Muir woods is okay, overly trampled by massive amounts of people, but
okay.
There's no shortage of cool stuff to do for a day (or longer) in the San
Francisco area. Point Reyes National Seashore usually is uncrowded and
well worth the visit.
Yeah, it's usually uncrowded because it's cold, windy and rainy!! Taking
a ride up to the Fort Bragg area is nice, as is taking a drive along the
coast toward Carmel.
