He was charged with a number of crimes and was pursued by the FBI. He remained a fugitive for a period of time. Because of some illegal activities by the FBI while investigating, the charges were dropped.

Ayers was a domestic terrorist and has admitted it. He got off on a technicality. That doesn't change the facts.
