I found some locals here that are into paddling as well, but more into
kayaks than canoes. We went down and did the coosa at Wetumpka... My buddy
and I did well except for Moccasin Gap, where we got blocked out of our
"parking spot" and ended up pulled backwards into the current and the
rapids.. hahaha Got it turned around, but my partner (now the "U-boat
commander") didn't think to get his weight out of the bow... the nose came
back up once, then dove in hard in the second hydraulic... I'm glad there
weren't any more.... could have hurt!

We also learned how to throw a swamped canoe to empty it.... pretty cool.
We sat and rested on the next rock outcropping and watched the next 10 or 15
canoes get swamped... we don't feel so bad now... but we're ready to go
back....

Maybe a little practice at the areas you've recommended will be a good idea
before our encore..

Locust Fork
Mulberry Fork
Bear Creek (NW Alabama)
Town Creek (near Langston AL).

Hiawassee, Nantahala, and Ocoee are only a few hours drive.


check with the Huntsville Canoe Club. They paddle a different
spot about every weekend.
