Actually, the mainsail trimmer should have a scan pattern, primarily looking at the horizon and the helm (and the helmsperson's hands: how clenched they are is a key to what needs to happen with the main). Definitely the trimmer should look up at the sail, in fact should check several reference points on the sail (leach ribbons, luff, upper camber, lower camber, etc etc) but should not stare fixedly at the sail the whole time. Sail trim question ;)
Hey Grasshopper,
How can you tell if you have horizontal or vertical wrinkles , how can you tell if the top batten is parallel to the boom if you don't look? How can you tell, or for that matter, why put tell-tales on the sail if you aren't going to look at them? When I tack I want my main sail trimer to ease the traveler enough to get speed back to where it was and then follow me as I work back upwind. I don't want to direct each move every single time. Not with experience crew. LOOK AT WHAT YOU'RE DOING! Ole Thom |
