Default Paper charts are for Wannabees

I place a screen with an electronic chart in front
of the helmsman.

And then what happens when a big wave goes S{LOOSH and takes the thing =
overboard? (the screen, not the navigator)

Why should the helmsman look at the charts? He's got enough to do.
Watching the charts is the job of the navigator. The helmsman should
be watching the instruments, the sails, and the water. He doesn't
have time to look at charts.

You said you got your neighbor with a Galaxy. Are you
now claiming you didn't?

I fail to see how "getting him with a Galaxy" is a gay
troll. Care to explain that? Or did you mis-read it and
think I wrote "IN a Galaxy"?????

you.

Especially not before leaving the dock. Of course, that's not
an issue for you, since you get your fags, I mean flags in a bar.

I will if you persist in such a lubberly fashion...electronic charts?
Where's the romance? Where's the glory? What about all those
pathetic little pencil marks, lovingly placed every trip with each
new find? What if someone blows the friggin satellite up? What f
you can't get near enough to a K-Mart to get new ones (let alone
steal new ones like one person here)? Perre, you've been brainwashed
into the 2st century. Technology isn't everything. I refuse to give
up my wonderful rolled up charts (BTW, we buy them on proected
paper). I refuse to give up the compass and dividers.

Sigh.
What am I gonna do with you? How about if I let you keep one chart rolled up
and a pencil to go with it.

I wouldn't put it in such a way that it could happen. How many times has
your flushmounted compass been washed aoverboard?

It's the opposite of what you might thing. Rather than
being a victim of the USCG tests and regulations I'm
a beneficiary of a superior knowledge and understanding
of how the COLREGS apply and how to become a safer,
saner and more responsible sailor. The things I know that,
all by themselves, will keep me from being 'at fault' in any
possible close quarters situation or collision will allow me
to sue the **** out of any motorboater who is unfortunate
enough to hit me. In this manner I can parlay a small
investment in time and study into a brand new, million-dollar
yacht. Better yet, I might decide to start a new world class
yacht company named "Coronado Yachts" and build my
own perfect sailboat. You wouldn't be interested, though,
because the perfect yacht has only ONE hull.

No no. I am bragging about being a real sailor and not somebody tied up by
regulations and ´certifications. I can make the correct decision based upon
what is happening. You have to make the correct decision based upon whether
you want to keep your license or not.

And yes I am not a professional seafarer althoough I am a real sailor. You
just don't have the guts to stand up and say. BURN THOSE PAPER CHARTS.

Comer to think of it you are starting to sound like you are a victim of the
USCG. How did you ever manage to put yourself in such a spot? Please don't
tell me you had *fun* in the makings of that. If you did I will never again
read your lessons for novices.

Simple Simon wrote:
That's fine. Knock yourself out! But, I don't have that
option. It's much easier for you because you've nothing
in the way of certification or skills so you've nothing to
lose. In a way you're bragging about being an amateur.
Like I said, knock yourself out.

Who the hell is a USCG licensed Captain or Master? I'm not and I
refuse to
spend any more money on updating my papercharts, when I can spend it
on far
more superior electronic charts.

You can't be so dumb to not know of the USCG requirement
for all their licensed Captains and Masters to have a PAPER
chart of the area aboard their vessels. Electronic simply won't
do.

If I had 12 bucks for every GPS or laptop that malfunctioned at
sea.... why I'd be poorer than you, even though I wouldn't waste
the
occasional twelve bucks that came my way on Rum and painkillers.

Don't knock it... it's liquid courage to fortify you while you
watch
yet another paper chart flying like a psycho kite downwind with
all
your plots and data. It's also good for post lightening trauma
while
you warm your hands on the fried circuit boards of your high tech
navigational array.

Not enough. Wanna do a joint venture.

I'm broke ... frickin cost of charts are killin' me!

CM

Don't worry Moroon. If this thread does it's job, everybody on
a.s.a
will
let their paper charts fly with the winds and you can collect a
bundle
of 12
dollar bills. You can also empty the spirits in your compass down
your
throat. That'll save you maybe half a bottle of Overproof.
