Default VHF Q? Bart?

Next time it happens if it happens, try keying
the mike on an unused channel on high power.
This usually gets rid of all the static build up
as well.

What you experienced was static buildup in and around
the antenna. It probably was due to the solar flares. NOAA
comes in on the AM band so it is subject more to this kind
of interference. Your body when touching mike acted as
a damper to remove some of the interference from around
the receiver.

While listening to Uncle NOAA the other night, my radio started cutting out,
intermittently. Reaching for the radio, as I touched the mike cord the radio
worked fine. When I let go, static. then the next morning, it seemed to
work just fine. Someone suggested a bad ant. gound (?). What do you think?

But why would my holding the mike cord effect it?

Wasn't that about the time of the solar flares?
We saw the Northern Lights way down here. Radio
and TV sound was affected as well.

NOAA weather is on 162.400, 162.425, 162.450, 162.475, 162.500, 162.525,
and 162.550. VHF FM frequencies. If Scott was touching the mike, then
it was for his VHF FM radio. Please list the AM frequencies.

My mistake. It's not the AM band but rather the public service band.

My point about the interference still stands because of the low frequencies.

162.500 MHz from Sudlersville, MD, to be precise.

Isn't your mike cord insulated? If so, I wouldn't think that touching it
could affect the ground plane.

It's got nothing to do with grounding.

It's got to do with masking interference from
static buildup which can even travel across
plastic.
