Bottom Paint
On both O'Day's and on Chanteuse we've always used VC 17 every other =
year for bottom paint and have never had much af a problem with build = up, even when moored last year, which really surprised me. A lot of = boats on the moorings had garden's growing around their waterlines where = we didn't (but then, we sailed and a lot of them just sat there). Now = that we're fairly certain we'll be moving this summer to the Gulf Coast = of Florida, we have to change our regimen to accomodate salt water. At = present, we have two coats of VC 17 over the new bottom. We asked at = Torresen's and they recommended using Interlux Micron anti-fouling paint = but that we would have to sand off the VC17 (quite lethal stuff) They = quoted 2600.00 plus the cost of the paint to do it. When we go down in = April, we're going to get quotes from yards threr, too. Just how nasty = would sanding off 2 coats of VC17 be? Is Interlux Micron as thin as VC = 17 or is it a thicker paint? How many coats of Interlux can you put on = before having to resand? We'll probably be usiing the boat for live = aboard the first year we're there, so it will be sitting in a marina = rather than on a mooring...seems most of the marinas are on the river = with flowing water rather than still. Will this make a difference in = the growth factor? --=20 katysails s/v Chanteuse Kirie Elite 32 http://katysails.tripod.com "Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea." - Robert A. Bottom Paint
I don't know about taking off the VC17 - do any of the chemical removers work on
it? I've used Micron for the last 12 years and have never sanded if off. When you think its getting thick, you just skip a year, painting only the waterline and leading/trailing edges. I alternate colors so its easy to tell where its worn. The Micron worked pretty well on our trip, which included FL; We started with 3 coats and after a year we hauled for a quick clean (actually we hauled to do the zincs etc.) and there was only moderate growth. Bottom Paint
I had VC-17 on the Mac, the stuff is very thin. Last year I removed the
bottom paint (ablative) from the Seidelmann, after scraping the big chunks, I sanded using a good orbital with a hose attached to a big shop vac. Very little dust. Wear a good respirator. I used Micron xtra, much thicker than VC-17. After hauling this year I'll put a coat on around the water line where brushed too aggressively . Are you really moving this time? How are you getting Chartreuse down there? Ask the locals what works when you visit. I can't believe you're going to be liveaboard marina trash. ;o Scotty "katysails" wrote in message ... Scotty asked: Are you really moving this time?=20
Hopefully...we'll know for sure by the end of April How are you getting Chartreuse down there? We'll have to ship her...we're still a bit concerned about the water = levels down there and whether it might not be best to sell her here (my = heart gives way every time I think of that) and get a boat down there = that fdoesn't draft 6 ft. I don't want to do that, but we'll have to = see when we get there in April if it's feasuble to take her or not. Ask the locals what works when you visit. I can't believe you're going = to be liveaboard marina trash. ;o Hey...watch it...I'm going to be liveaboard elite....after all, our boat = has spars!=20 --=20 katysails s/v Chanteuse Kirie Elite 32 http://katysails.tripod.com "Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea." - Robert A. Katy, Your marina is either trying to make money on you or they are just stupid when it comes to bottom paints. VC-17 is nothing more than a Vinyl antifouling paint the same as Baltoplate. You can paint over a vinyl but you can't apply vinyl over any other paint. Do a little reading. The $2600 would be wasted. S/V Express 30 "Ringmaster" "No shirt, no skirt, full service" |

Kinda expensive, might get a better rate in the Gulf. I can get the bottom sanded and painted and the cost of the yard motels ect for a total of 2000 here. And some of the marinas in Galveston are cheaper and allow you to do the work yourself if you so desire. I think once your sanding off paint it's all pretty much the same as far as labor goes. When we go down in April, we're going to get quotes from yards threr, too. Just how nasty would sanding off 2 coats of VC17 be? Is Interlux Micron as thin as VC 17 or is it a thicker paint? How many coats of Interlux can you put on before having to resand? Depends on how well the under coats adhere. Most people here sand between every coat. Some people quick haul everyyear waterblast and touch up. A good coat should hold up for 3 years with an ocassional underwater scrubbing. We'll probably be usiing the boat for live aboard the first year we're there, so it will be sitting in a marina rather than on a mooring...seems most of the marinas are on the river with flowing water rather than still. Will this make a difference in the growth factor? Depends on how close you are to the gulf and how far the tital flow goes. Here the water is brackish, half fresh half salt. If your in flowing water growth will be much faster, filter feeders love flowing water. I spent a summer on a canal next to the bay that had adverage flow of 3 knots all the time and it was amazing how fast growth attached itself to the hull. Now Im in a surrounded by land marina with no flow and growth is real slow. Id rather have some flow as it flushes the marina without a good rain. Weve had a bloated coon floating around the marina for a week now. Not as bad as a rotten alligator thou. They stink to high heaven. Perhaps we will get out the six shooters and pop him today so the crabs can eat him. Were on the gulf coast do you plan to live? Joe |

Yes Kate, do some reading, like Interlux's recommendation to always remove VC17
when changing paint: http://www.yachtpaint.com/Images/15_20650.pdf "SAIL LOCO" wrote in message ...
