A friend has fits of remorse if he throws a round outside a 12 inch circle
at 1000 yards firing offhand (standing, no support) using an old Garand with
iron sights. Another whacked several Iraqis at nearly twice that range with
a .50 cal sniper rifle. They're what I call good, but it took alot of
training and practice.

I'm a mediocre shot by those standards. I'd need a scope and some support to
hit anything at 1000 yards. I can however lay round after round on a
man-size target at 50-100 yards with a pistol, and twice that with a rifle.
I have conscientiously spent many many hours firing literally 1000s of
rounds to achieve even that moderate level of skill.

I doubt that many pirates have bothered to practice that strenuously and
hence doubt their ability to shoot even as poorly as I do. In fact, I
suspect they shoot even worse than NYPD officers. One would be pretty safe
so long as they were trying to hit you - given the percent of bullets that
hit their target in typical shoot outs.

yeah, sure, right, ubetcha. every pirate/thief on the planet has the

reaction
time of a snail, and shoots with the accuracy of an 8 year old girl on a
badmitten court.

Default War of Independence

The last battle was at Yorktown. Cornwallis was under seige, and
awaiting reinforcements. The French fleet cut off the ships bringing
those reinforcements, giving the victory to Washington. Didn't you
notice the French ships in the harbor near the end of that last
battle?

Very little was written about the "Battle of the Capes" between
the British and French Fleets at the mouth of the Cheasepeake
Bay. The Brits really screwed this one up by not engaging the
French. The French fleet successfully defended their postion.
After dancing around for a few days, the French were reinforced,
and the slightly outnumbered British fleet chickened out and ran
away.

On land Cornwallis was pinched off, and surrendered six weeks
later--entirely due to the British Navy's failure to engage and
fight the French decisively when they had the chance.

All Americans owe British Rear Admirals Hood, and Graves and
Prime Minister Lord North--the notable "Brit's who quit", that
threw in the towel, and our gratitude to French Rear Admiral de
Grasse for this relatively minor battle which had enormous
strategic implications.

All seriousness aside, this was the last time the French helped us
out. And probably the last time.

Sometimes I think that the only reason Great Britian is on our side is
because it ****es off the French.

I guess this means the French will fight when cornered and
have no place to run.
