Nutsy' trolling about how much he sails. Is there some kind of standard?
Is there a certain time? Frequency? Distance? Does it make a difference where you sail? Is there a requirement on how you sail? In a Hove-to condition, do you count the time as sailing? Do you count the distance you stay on station or how far you drift? I use to moor across from a sailor who had a Junk rigged Schooner, set up for single handing. He would go sailing two or three times a year. He had two globe circling trips to his credit and untold numbers off trans Pacific Trips. How would you count his sailing? He would show up at the marina and start working on his boat and tell me: "Tom, I'm going sailing in a couple of weeks." He would take off and I wouldn't see him for months. So, I ask, Does it make a difference? Ole Thom |

Good reply Scot;
That's as good as any. How much pleasure each sail generates, to that sailor. As far as I know, that is the only cargo carried by any ASA sailor. Ole Thom |

No, Thom and that was my point. Only Donal is busy judging boat build quality by distance sailed. RB Distance sailed is a very poor way to measure a boat, or its skipper, or its crew. I have sailed for weeks... hundreds of miles at a stretch..95% of the time on autohelm..... in conditions which would not be a problem for a virtual novice skipper and crew... would not stress even a very old and ill maintained yacht. biggest problem can be staying awake! But to have sailed only two miles... in appalling conditions ... in a narrow channel crowded with moored boats swinging in all directions (due to wind over tide)...... ................ |

Most of us get our pleasure from sailing in different ways. Bob seems to think that sailing is about "females on board". Scotty seems to search out serendipity. Oz seems to get his kicks from racing. I just enjoy being on the water - even in the marina!! Regards Donal -- |

Sailing is about sailing. Sailing with females can be even more fun. Today I sailed the boat alone until 2:30, when I picked up Suzanne and her friends. I had a good time before and after. You should try meeting some women, Donal. It's good for the soul. RB |
