Default Rust on a mooring chain

Rust on a mooring chain - New (2001) mushroom anchor, chain and float ;
never out of the water. I pulled the top 5 feet of chain up through the
mooring float and noticed perhaps a 1/16 inch of scale rust on many links.
I had assumed most rust was due to chains coming out of the water for the
winter and sitting in boat yards.Is this due to galvanic action in my
mooring field ? Would some zinc on the chain help ?

1. Perhaps it is because it is uncoated in salt water.
2. Take a volt meter in your mooring field and find out if any
galvanic action is present.
3. Whats the big deal? How much load do you think your mushroom can
put on the chain? Just buy some new chain in 5 or 6 years.
4. If your really worried buy stainless steel chain, or if your like
the blobster, just ask the guys at boatsUS for the chrome chain.

Good Luck

Buy one that won't rust.
