Why is the American Flag folded 13 times
The 21-gun salute comes from summing of the digits in the year 1776. The American flag is folded 13 times with each fold symbolizes in the following order--life, belief in eternal life, honoring veterans, trusting God, in tribute to our country, the pledge of allegiance, in tribute to our armed forces, in honor of women and our mothers, in honor of our fathers, the Jewish God, the Christian God, and finally "In God We Trust". The final tuck reminds us of the soldiers and sailors who wore the cocked hat of our early history. The US Flag, is called the National Ensign--50-stars and 13 stripes. When not under way, a ship flies the national ensign from a flagstaff at the stern from 8:00 a.m. until sunset. When entering port at night the ensign should fly from the gaff to establish its nationality. Under way it should be flown from the gaff, or leech of the sail at approximately the same position where a gaff would be. Ashore. Same basic rules. A proper flag pole will have a gaff and spreaders to duplicate that of a sailing vessel. It flies at the top of the flagpole, except that it flies at the gaff of any pole or mast that is has a gaff. It should be flown on most holidays with a few notable exceptions. However, I feel it is never improper to display the flag on any date. The National Ensign should be well maintained. Don't fly a ratty looking National Ensign. I approve of the people, yacht clubs, or others who proudly fly it at night well illuminated. The proper size for the national flag is one inch of flag length per foot of boat length, going to the next larger standard size, if necessary. Upside down it's used ONLY as a sign of distress. It disrespectful to fly it upside down in other than a distress situation where life and safety are threatened with immediate danger that demands quick action. There is also the Yacht Ensign, fouled anchor encircled by stars, which I don't think much of. It is more proper to fly the US Flag. And it is never improper to fly the US flag in lieu of Yacht Ensign. Lame people fly the Yacht Ensign. Patriots fly the US Flag or National Ensign. Joe wrote Anyone know? Flying her upside down is a sign of distress.
Or just Horvath trying to hoist a flag...and getting it wrong. RB |
