Good for 1.5 asa points Joe, I'm only answering because I know that it will really hurt you to give me some points! A Ghost is the image that appears on your radar screen as a result of the signal that bounced off the real target, and then bounced off of your boat before being bounced off the real target again. I know that you weren't able to understand that explanation - so I'll have another go. A Ghost is a false image on your Radar screen. Regards Donal -- |

Regards Donal That may be one of the answers, but it is not the only answer ..... operator error and atmospherics, can also cause a "ghost". otn |

Where did you get that line of BS Donal? Is that a yachtmaster physic explaination? I know that you weren't able to understand that explanation - so I'll have another go. A Ghost is a false image on your Radar screen. Thats not correct either. Anyone else wanna try to provide the correct answer before I set Donal strait? Joe Regards Donal -- |

However, I have noticed that somebody else has said that the signal may have bounced off a third party to produce the ghost. I agree with them. Anyone else wanna try to provide the correct answer before I set Donal strait? Go on Joe .... set me strait. Regarghds Ok Its a radar signal thats source can not be readily determined. Or its a signal that is not repeated on each and every sweep that is made by your radar. Sometimes a ghost is a reflection that you and nav describe, sometimes it is an object that is so low or has such a lousy return that it only shows up when you and the target or on the crest of waves or when the target is ata angle to reflect your signal. So it may indeed be a real target but when it keeps disappearing and returning from the scope it is called a ghost. You should write your radar mfg. and let them know the true meaning of a ghost, they assume that a ghost is not a real target and in doing so they might get someone hurt if they are running at high speeds. Often huge stumps return ghost signals as they bob in and out of the water. Joe Donal -- |
