Hunter builds a good one!

A new Hunter 33 came into my club a couple of weeks ago and I finally got a
close look. 1st of all, this is not a typical bathtub hunter like Horvath's and
most others. They actually gave the boat some lines. Some damage is done by the
three odd sized windows/ports, but the overall look of the boat is a huge
improvement. They also carried the doghouse coachroof too far forward for
volume, but that can be forgiven in today's market. Down below one gets the
impression that Hunter is continuing to improve. Fit and finish was good, the
sole was solid and things were less plastic-like. The cockpit was well laid out
and the big swimplatform/scoop looks like fun. I've sailed side-by-side with
the boat and it sails well, though it has in mast furling.

Right now, Catalina has been the only "family" boat at a low pricepoint I'd
consider for a new boat. Beneteau quality has always been suspect along with
Hunters. I think the new Hunter looks nicer/as nice as the Catalina 32 and they
have clearly cleaned up somewhat on quality.

Which they copied mostly from Beneteau

Also influenced mostly by the Beneteau designs for its 331 and 323
models, except (as with Catalina) one can order a boat with either the
plasticized or teak/holly salon/cabin sole.

On virtually every point of sail in most wind conditions, it sails
(noticably) comparatively slower that the comparably sized Benneteaus
and Catalinas with in-mast furling.

Tautologically speaking, however, those who don't mind the overhead
traveler and otherwise like this boat won't mind the overhead traveler
and will otherwise like this (for its size/configuration) reasonably
priced boat.

Not too shabby. The swim platform looks a little small, and where is
the swim ladder?

I saw a C&C 99 at a boat show in Chicago. It was poorly made. Some
of the doors wouldn't close properly.

The ladder is there. It telescopes on the boat I saw. Swim platform if pretty
roomy for a 33.

Are you kidding? Mine is much bigger. I've got storage lockers on
the platform, and a shower.

How big is your boat? Hunter has moved away from boats that look like yours
because they "tired of the ridicule."
This was actually told to me by a rep at Sailing Specialties.
While Hunter may be copying Beneteau and Catalina, the new boat is certainly a
huge improvement.

We checked out a new C&C at the Michigan City In-The-Water Boat Show in
August. Sadly, it appeared cheapened from earlier C&Cs and we found similar
problems, including floor access panels poorly fit, doors that either didn't
close or didn't stay closed, and finish mistakes on several pieces of wood.
Externally it seemed about on par with earlier boats, but the interior was
unattractive and poorly done. Not to mention an astronomical price
considering such flaws. C&C is resting on its laurels and doesn't offer
good value for the money.

Maybe you should compare the C&Cs layup schedule with the Hunter's.

That's exactly what I thought. I was shocked that most of these
things could be easily fixed before the boat show.

So did we. The Beneteaus were similarly unprepared for the show.

At the last show in AC, the Beneteaus were a mess (again). The Smaller hunters
were barley together with screws missing and tables that were not fully
fastened. The larger hunters were better treated by the reps. This sort of
thing is common. I've seen at every boat show on a variety of boats.

In addition to negligence in repairing such deficiencies, the boats simply
appeared cheapened internally. Not up to typical C&C standards, IMO.

Oddly enough the Catalinas seemed as well-prepared as any boats at the MC
show. Of course the Tartans and other such upper-end boats all looked
marvelous, inside and out.

In this area (AC boat show included) the Catalina line is handled by Coney's
Marine. They tend to do a good job.

I guess you guys don't talk to dealers. The new Catalina 350 and C&C 99 were
brought all over the country. There were only those hulls. 2 additional
Catalina 350's were built and sold, but with provisions for a few more shows at
a discount to the buyers. Common practice.
The Catalina's shown in this area are shown by a single dealer, Coney's.
Recently, the 47 they used belonged to someone. LI Yacht sales does the same
deal with C&Cs amd Tartans often making deals with owners. Freedom and Island
Packet don't always go through a dealer, with company reps linking with local
dealers. It's different in different areas. I was aboard a big Jenneau recently
and they wouldn't even allow boat shoes. Socks only. Privately owned boat.

Certainly you're not talking about this year's shows, because there are C
