Default Hunter builds a good one!

A new Hunter 33 came into my club a couple of weeks ago and I finally got a
close look. 1st of all, this is not a typical bathtub hunter like Horvath's and
most others. They actually gave the boat some lines. Some damage is done by the
three odd sized windows/ports, but the overall look of the boat is a huge
improvement. They also carried the doghouse coachroof too far forward for
volume, but that can be forgiven in today's market. Down below one gets the
impression that Hunter is continuing to improve. Fit and finish was good, the
sole was solid and things were less plastic-like. The cockpit was well laid out
and the big swimplatform/scoop looks like fun. I've sailed side-by-side with
the boat and it sails well, though it has in mast furling.

Here's a pic from Yachtworld...

Right now, Catalina has been the only "family" boat at a low pricepoint I'd
consider for a new boat. Beneteau quality has always been suspect along with
Hunters. I think the new Hunter looks nicer/as nice as the Catalina 32 and they
have clearly cleaned up somewhat on quality.

Man, you can tell that thing was made to sail. The traveler is above the
bimini which is part of the "radar arch" which is part of the ................

I'll drop down a foot and take the C&C99.

The ladder is there. It telescopes on the boat I saw. Swim platform if pretty
roomy for a 33.

Are you kidding? Mine is much bigger. I've got storage lockers on
the platform, and a shower.

How big is your boat? Hunter has moved away from boats that look like yours
because they "tired of the ridicule."
This was actually told to me by a rep at Sailing Specialties.
While Hunter may be copying Beneteau and Catalina, the new boat is certainly a
huge improvement.

I saw a C&C 99 at a boat show in Chicago. It was poorly made. Some
of the doors wouldn't close properly.

We checked out a new C&C at the Michigan City In-The-Water Boat Show in
August. Sadly, it appeared cheapened from earlier C&Cs and we found similar
problems, including floor access panels poorly fit, doors that either didn't
close or didn't stay closed, and finish mistakes on several pieces of wood.
Externally it seemed about on par with earlier boats, but the interior was
unattractive and poorly done. Not to mention an astronomical price
considering such flaws. C&C is resting on its laurels and doesn't offer
good value for the money.

Maybe you should compare the C&Cs layup schedule with the Hunter's.
