It's Over
Another sailing season gone by the wayside...the boat is out...it rained,
snowed, haled, and blew all day...the row out to the mooring at 8 am was very interesting. Gale warnings up...fortunately the wind was behind us but we almost overshot the stern! We pulled 64 boats between 8:30 am until 4:30 om...now we're defrosting our feet and hoping tomorrow will be warmer so we can go play with the pink Kool-Aid.... -- katysails s/v Chanteuse Kirie Elite 32 "Women and cats will do as they please..." We pull right at the yacht club with a crane...Torr4esen's Marine comes over
with a crane, 3 high-lo's and 2 trailer/tractor combos and it's like a giant chain reaction....everyone is divided into teams...we were on the cradle team....had to locate the cradle up next in the queue and point it out to the hi=lo guy who then loaded it into a waiting trailer...then the crew positions and the trailer takes off for the staging area to be loaded with a boat...then there's a crew on the wall where they lift out and a crew on the adjacent dock...you back up into the area with your boat and throw lines off 4 corners...the crane drops the slings down and they position the slings and voila! up and out and onto the trailer....then they take you to your parking place and the power washer crew comes and blasts all the grunge and mussels off the bottom...the rule is that if you don't work, they don't pull your boat. i'm impressed.
we haul about 75 boats in 2 months! tide is an issue. boat is still in the H20 but i've mostly called it quits for the year. i may try to get out on one more day....we'll see always next season to look forward to................. gf. Yes...if the water is warm enough...Lake MI never got much above 65 this
year....i did scrub away a couple of times with the scrub brush as far as I could reach...zebra mussels are not like your ocean mussels...they are very tiny...big ones are not as big as a thumb nail...and they are razor sharp so you have to be very careful of slicing yourself and getting an infection.... We all have bottom paint...we use VC 18 every year...and we all had zebra
mussels....Muskegon Lake is an industrial lake...we've noticed that our bottom paint doesn't;t last as long as it did up at White Lake, which is surprising since there were all those dilute contaminants from the old Hooker plant there and the stuff from the tannery....no we've got a paper mill... Muskegon Chrinicle had an article yesterday about the algae bloom that has
terorized us the past 2 months,....turns out it's the blue green variety and caused by the Zebra mussels...and is quite toxic (monocystins...of the kill your liver type...) They've just put up warnings to not wade, swim, or let your dog go in the water, and to not eat any fish out of Muskegon lake, White Lake or Lake Leelenau, the 3 affected lakes. Of course, we've now had several freeZes and the stuff is dying off...ya think they could have determined this when the stuff was in full bloom???? They've got NOAA, U of M and GVSU all working on the problem.... |

A microbiologist from MSU was on TV today and stated that the fear of the toxins was grossly overstated in that Muskegon Chronicle article. He said you'd probably have to ingest a substantial amount of the actual algal colonies to get enough to make yourself ill. Wading won't do it. Dogs, OTOH, should be kept out of the water, as they tend to drink a lot while swimming. No, Chopper, stay on the dock. Oh wait! You don't have a dock, do ya? :-) Max |

NC Offshore is fine for salt water but doeas little in fresh water....it is
not the bottom paint of choice here...VC 17 works fine except for the little problem of the blue green algae this year....I think that's a freshwater phenomenon....as are zebra mussels....read the flyers on VC Offshire...it is not meant for freshwater "SAIL LOCO" wrote in message ...
