Default It's Over

Another sailing season gone by the wayside...the boat is out...it rained,
snowed, haled, and blew all day...the row out to the mooring at 8 am was
very interesting. Gale warnings up...fortunately the wind was behind us but
we almost overshot the stern! We pulled 64 boats between 8:30 am until 4:30
om...now we're defrosting our feet and hoping tomorrow will be warmer so we
can go play with the pink Kool-Aid....

How many travellifts does your marina have?

We pull right at the yacht club with a crane...Torr4esen's Marine comes over
with a crane, 3 high-lo's and 2 trailer/tractor combos and it's like a giant
chain reaction....everyone is divided into teams...we were on the cradle
team....had to locate the cradle up next in the queue and point it out to
the hi=lo guy who then loaded it into a waiting trailer...then the crew
positions and the trailer takes off for the staging area to be loaded with a
boat...then there's a crew on the wall where they lift out and a crew on the
adjacent dock...you back up into the area with your boat and throw lines off
4 corners...the crane drops the slings down and they position the slings and
voila! up and out and onto the trailer....then they take you to your parking
place and the power washer crew comes and blasts all the grunge and mussels
off the bottom...the rule is that if you don't work, they don't pull your
boat.

i may try to get out on one more day....we'll see
always next season to look forward to.................

1. Why would anyone with a sailboat have grunge and mussels on the bottom? How
do they sail?
2. If you have to work is the hull out free?

Because Miskegon Lake os dirty, because we had the hugest algae bloom I've
ever seen, and because zebra mussels don't care what they attach
to....everyone has them...they are not an exclusive animal...

and haulout and storage are GREATLY reduced from the prices ar local
marinas...enough that mist members take advantage of the situation,,,
off the bottom...the rule is that if you don't work, they don't pull your
boat.

Doesn't anyone get under the boat and wipe it off during the season?

I've never seen zebra mussels on a boat that had bottom paint.

And I sail on Lake Erie. If you put your hand in the water for ten
minutes, you'll have zebra mussels growing on it.

Yes...if the water is warm enough...Lake MI never got much above 65 this
year....i did scrub away a couple of times with the scrub brush as far as I
could reach...zebra mussels are not like your ocean mussels...they are very
tiny...big ones are not as big as a thumb nail...and they are razor sharp so
you have to be very careful of slicing yourself and getting an infection....

We all have bottom paint...we use VC 18 every year...and we all had zebra
mussels....Muskegon Lake is an industrial lake...we've noticed that our
bottom paint doesn't;t last as long as it did up at White Lake, which is
surprising since there were all those dilute contaminants from the old
Hooker plant there and the stuff from the tannery....no we've got a paper
mill...
