Either that ship has three monster generators, or one weird main propulsion
set-up.

At that distance, was the smell pretty bad? We try to give them a bit more
space if for no other reason.

We were going into freeport Jon. Home of Dow Chemicals, Dupont, 3M,
ect...ect..ect...and the wind was from the north. The ship had a nice
fresh pine smell compared to Freeport.

We meet just outside the rocks... so not much room to give a wide
berth. Besides, nothing like the thrill of being next to a 8 story
steel wall as it races by. I talked with the pilot, knew him from
running crewboats outta Mobil at Freeport.

Great pic, but, I would have taken a half dozen shots withy my 75-300 IS and
I guarantee you would have had both vessels in focus. OTOH, beggars can't be
choosers, I have a half dozen or pics of my boat that a dock neighbor took,
without my asking.

Well OTN,
No telling these days. She appears to be some kind of a bulk hauler.
She could have 3 engines geared to a shaft, or two geared to a shaft and
a boiler for auxiliary stuff and that is just the top left corner of a
matrix these days.

Azipod (big assed electric outboards) seem to be the provice of cruise
ships that spend too much time manuavering, but I am told they are being
used on tankers because then the main unit can also provide unloading power.

Lots of lakers do something like this.

I have a feeling that the ME stack is a single larger one fwd of these and
obscured.
Since it's Freeport, there's a pretty good chance this is a tanker which
could mean that she's using electric motors for cargo pumps.
This would account for the rather large triple exhaust stacks .... big
generators.
BG Really unimportant ..... just one of the many "checks" I make when
sizing up a ship.
