the distress signal (...---...) came first, after the
original distress signal (CQD[?]) was deemed to be too
confusing. It just so happens that the signal represented
SOS. It was later that someone coined the Save Our Ship
phrase. This was on the History Channel a while ago.

Correct Scotty.... they were selected to indicate a distress because,
in Morse code, these letters and their combination create an
unmistakable sound pattern.

SOS. It was later that someone coined the Save Our Ship

send out.

MGY (the Titanic's call sign) CQD

And some time later they remembered the then-new signal and sent

MGY SOS

So the answer is both.

Hmmm... my understanding was the the Titanic did not send up any distress
signal, although there were claims that they did. They fired rockets, but
not red ones I believe.
