Well done Joe!
10 Welsh points.

I would have said less looking at the still pic. Blowing NNE f6-7 for
previous three days. 2.5-3 metres sea. Looking back towards Dublin,
approaching Wicklow head. SOG about 12 kts with only 1/3 foresail
out, no main but about 4-5kts. tide with us.

Heading for start of Celtic Challenge 2004.

6.0 It only surfs downwind.

Yeah, it is not very pretty above the waterline. The pullpit is inside
the forestay. Handy to sit in the hatch and clip on to change
jibs. The plastic pipe does not help the looks either but at least I
can see it without glasses! I put my effort into fixing the keel and a
few other things when it broke the box and started swinging like a
pendulum. I'll worry about cosmetics later.
Time for bed.. Cheers.

Pretty nice waves there. From the wave crests I'd guage the
wind in the mid-teens, no spin drift or spray off the
breakers (at least none showing in the photo.

It doesn't look to me as if the boat is close hauled at all,
more like a broad reach.

Hard to say what the boat speed is since you can't see the
stern wave in the pic. I'd have guess less than 9 though, or
the track off the rudder would be more agitated.

Hmmm... sails look pretty good even if the rig is
unorthodox.... or does everybody in your part of the world
put the bow pulpit halfway up the fore deck?!

Interesting story. But what does it have to do with wind
speed?

SBV

The expression "Sweet Fanny Adams" refers to her and has

come, through
British naval slang, to mean "nothing at all".

So your answer is 0kts? Bzzzzt wrong!

Comparatively speaking Scooter.....bugger all in laymans

language.

You can bugger all the laymen you want, your answer is still
WRONG.

It was bugger all Scooter.
Real sailors sail in 15 - 20 and 6' seas every time!

Ah, so if it's blowing 14 you stay at the dock. I see.

90% of the time here the wind is on-shore with a fetch of 80nm+. In
this case it was off-shore with a fetch of perhaps 3nm. It was
basically flat but breezey. f4-5, 5 in pic.

It doesn't look to me as if the boat is close hauled at all,
more like a broad reach.

I would settle for a close reach. The wind was from the south and the
coast runs SW. It was a broad reach on the way back. The boat was not
entirely under tight control on account of being single-handed with a
camera in one hand.

Looks like a good 9 kts.

Come on, be fair. It is 22ft., how many boats of this general type
plane to windward? The most I have done is 12.5kn. on a broad reach
but you get back quick under those conditions.

No, it is odd. It makes sense though for the design. It is a 30+? year
old boat by Ian Procter like this one:
http://www.naiadhome.com/presto.htm The big genoa wraps around the
outside of the hull http://www.wareing.dircon.co.uk/images/partial.jpg
(mine) closing the gap and increasing the effective aspect ratio.
Also the 'chute lived (it is dead) in a tube that runs the length of
the cabin and pops out of a hole clear of everything where the anchor
is. See the video :-) ( no chute, active content video, please wait)
