For the money spent updating (screwing up) the island class boats they could have bought 15 new 165 ftrs like this one : http://www.beierradio.com/Customers/hotshot.jpeg Someone needs to go to prision and think about what they done. The days of the 4000 dollar toilet seats and 800 dollar hammers must be coming back into vogue. http://www.beierradio.com/Customers/hotshot.jpeg Someone needs to go to prision and think about what they done. Problems in the Coast Guard
Steve wrote: The problem is that the Coast Guard has been dragged into the Department of Defense. Everything will be much more expensive. Those old big cutters from the 60's were generations ahead of their time, using CODAG power plants. They have been in reliable service for over 40 years. The USCG got its start as the Revenue Cutter Service, mainly to stop rum runners and smugglers. I say turn the Coast Guard over to private industry. All towing and maintaince to aids to navigation I agree. They can maintain the bouys, do the rescues and all that. I would not trust a private firm to do rescues. The USCG is so far from its original roots it is pathetic. No ones running rum anymore, whatcha expect? Why are they in Iraq? Why send them to VietNam? Maybe they are better at harbor security / police operations.. Joe |

Um...the last time I looked, they were part of the Department of Homeland Security. Read this: http://www.uscg.mil/deepwater/pdf/nationalfleet2006.pdf Not that long ago they were under the Dept of Transportation. That document essentially makes them part of the Navy. Next we will see such arrangements between the Boy Scouts, the Army and Marine Corps to provide more cannon fodder for foriegn wars. The Navy already has the sea cadets and the Air Force has the CAP. Pleeeze.. The USCG is helping out the Navy because the navy needs shallow water boats. I would like to see lots of new Navy PT boats, and have the USCG guard our harbors and coast. I do not like the militarization of our country at all. It's a harbinger for pertual war. Maybe it's to prevent another terror attack. Joe |

Problems in the Coast Guard

I do not like the militarization of our country at all. It's a harbinger for pertual war No, I'll stay here and change it from within by legal means. You seem like the type to believe that if we had F-22's, Ospreys, JSF, DDX things would have gone much better in Iraq. A large military is no substitute for good policy, good diplomacy and good intelligence. Military action is the result of failed policy and not just short term policy. The habitual use of force on foriegn countries actually weakens our country. It shows no long range vision, no workable solutions and no consideration for others. Yeah, the US did topple Hussien's government, but failed on the nation building front. It isn't the military that failed in Iraq, we have the best and plenty of it, it is policy, diplomacy and intelligence that has failed. Maybe it is time the military got trimmed a bit so we can build up on the intelligence and diplomacy front. Does the Air Force really need a gold course on every base while the marines sleep in the mud? How long will America continue to lead the world as a model of liberty and tolerance when people such as you at the mere mention of any "anti American" criticism call for expulsion of those individuals from the country? Why are you so intolerant of people with opinions just a bit different than yours? Are you that insecure? Why must you resort to such black/white ultimatums? I do not like the militarization of our country. I do not like the suppression of civil liberties. I do not like holding people for long periods of time without due process. I resent seeing ordinary Americans treated with the suspicion that they are guilty of some crime or are about to perpetrate some act of terrorism. Next we will be building a wall, not to keep people out, but to keep them in. |

Even the military saw it as a failure of intelligence before the war started: http://www.usatoday.com/news/washing...1-05-iraq-game s_x.htm?csp=15 So what is Bush & Co doing now? Turning Iraq over to Iran! Remember Chamberlain and Hitler? WWII? There is going to be an even bigger war a decade or two down the road because of the failings in Iraq today. History will repeat itself. WWII was a repeat of WWI. We have Gulf War I and Gulf War II. Islamic control of nuclear weapons will make WWII look like an ice cream social. Imagine a war starting with Hiroshima. Israel will start the next world war. Just watch and see. Steve |

[snip] I do not like the militarization of our country at all. It's a harbinger for pertual war. Congrats on being honest enough to admit what your agenda is. As soon as you're ready to emigrate I'll be happy to assist in packing if you're anywhere nearby. No, I'll stay here and change it from within by legal means. Damn. It shows no long range vision, no workable solutions and no consideration for others. Yeah, the US did topple Hussien's government, Did we consider the Iraqi people in removing the evil dictator Saddam? Does the Air Force really need a gold course on every base FN right they do...were are they going to play drunken golf after they leave the enlisted mens club? while the marines sleep in the mud? Marines get off in sleeping in the mud. How long will America continue to lead the world as a model of liberty and tolerance when people such as you at the mere mention of any "anti American" criticism call for expulsion of those individuals from the country? He did not call for your expulsion, he said if you do not like it get out. Next we will be building a wall, not to keep people out, but to keep them in. Yeah right, more people try to get into the USA more than any other country TODAY. I bet you wonder why......right Skidoo? Joe |
