Adding lead ballast
I would like to add about 300 lb. of lead to the inside of the
hull of a fiberglass Luger 21, centerboard. This model has a lighter keel than the swing keel version. The ballast was recommended by the manufacturer, but not installed by the original owner. I can get thin lead sheets, aprox. 1/8" thick. I plan to brush epoxy on the hull (floor) between the ribs and on the lead, then press/roller down the lead. Sort of putting down a new layer of fiberglass on top of the old. Let the epoxy cure, then apply another layer of lead on top of the first layer. Building up successive layers of lead sheets. Finally covering the lead with fiberglass. Bad idea? Critics or suggestions welcome Thank you Lorence |
