Mechanical helm. Can't use puller as wheel is plastic with metal insert.
Will destroy wheel. Gordon "Ron White" wrote in message ... Assuming it is on a hydraulic helm, don't even tap on it a little. Use a puller. -- Ron White My boatbuilding website is: www.concentric.net/~knotreel |

Any tricks for pulling the plastic teleflex steering wheel. This sucker is

Try loosening the nut enough to expose the shaft/ wheel interface and spray some penetrating oil in there (likePB Blaster) After letting that soak loosen the nut to the end of the shaft making sure the nut is still fully engaged in the threads. This should allow for a gap between the nut & washer if there is one and the wheel. While pulling hard on the wheel with your hands at the 9 & 3 o'clock positions, have someone (helper) rap on the shaft with a hammer and a large punch. The nut will protect the threads. I have done the same thing by myself by wedging my knees behind the wheel and hitting the shaft Be sure to grease it before reinstalling. BR. |

As a note of discouragement, I have more than the usual resources in
workshop tools, but still I ended up with a Sawzall in hand, hacking the hub apart. Brian W On Sat, 16 Aug 2003 15:51:37 GMT, "GAZ" wrote: Mechanical helm. G I remember reading a post in one of the boat groups about using the difference in temperature between the two parts to do the work. This guy dumped ice town a metal tube that was stuck in something, waited a few minutes, and it popped right out, even after he had tried all sorts of penetrating oils. The tube cooled faster than the part it was stuck in. I think plastic expands when warm, (heat gun), after cooling the whole assembly with maybe some kind of cooling spray , or something really cold? I don't know. Hopenhelpin' Donny '74 Trojan Sea Raider 25' http://www.picturetrail.com/sixbennetts http://thebayguide.com/rec.boats/donny_bennett.html |
