Recommend HP + mounting outboard - 27' Sailboat?
My advise would be to repair or replace the engine. You will never be happy
with an outboard on a 27 footer. You would be better off with no engine than use an outboard. Heres why: In a seaway, the engine will get dunked; that's all you need another dead engine. Removing the engine when sailing is possible but something most people will do once. A proper bracket to hold the outboard on the stern will cost you a couple of bucks. Under power the propeller will be repeatedly out of the water if there is ANY sea running. If the engine is an Atomic 4 you are in luck, lots of parts available and lots of rebuilt engines available. Good Luck with your decision Dave "Kevin" wrote in message ... I'm a newbie sailor. We have a 27' Newport, 4 cyl inboard (Atomic?) The engine is very dead... and not economical to repair. (Cost more than value of boat) We would like leave the engine as is, and mount an outboard engine to assist with day cruising. Could you recommend HP + how to go about mounting an outboard? Also would we it be a fixed mount or ??? Thanks so much for any advice. |

Recommend HP + mounting outboard - 27' Sailboat?
Thanks for the advice.
Although I would love to replace the Atomic Four its just not an option... we'd probably sell the boat first. The good news is that we just need the engine to get us out of the slip for the most part. So I'm thinking an outboard will be fine for our this. (Just day cruiser) So I've priced some engines, but would be interested what advice you could give on the engine mounts. Is this going to be a real hassle? Thanks again, Kevin San Diego, Newport 27 Lloyd Sumpter wrote: http://www3.telus.net/Atomic_4_Eng_Service/index.htm Or, if you can wait till spring, I may have an M25 that would suit you well - it's too wimpy for my 36-ft sailboat, but would push a 27ft-er just fine. There are LOTS of 27-footers with outboards: I had an outboard on my Cal 25. Never had it swamped, but prop-out-of-the-water was a problem. MUCH cheaper than rebuilding or replacing the inboard, though! For a 27' sailboat you are limited to a 9.9 hp Yamaha or Honda with the high-thrust gearing and prop. The mount should be a retractable designed to take the power and weight. Cheap mounts wont cut it. The transom will probably have to be reinforced to mount the motor. The disadvantages are that horsepower is a little low for a 27 footer going windward in a stiff breeze and a chop (more powerful outboards are geared and propped for planing boats and not a displacement hull like a sailboat), limited battery charging capability (~10 -12 amps is about it), and in any kind of a sea the prop will tend to come out of the water (potentially over speeding the engine). And you aren't going to save that much money: outboard $2300 mount $200 transom reinforcing $100-300 (you doing it or paying someone to do it) Tanks, lines, misc $100 total $2700-2900 For that kind of money you are at the price of a remanufactured Atomic4 with upgrades like electronic ignition, etc. JJ There are LOTS of 27-footers with outboards: I had an outboard on my Cal 25. Kevin,
There IS an A4 listserver located at SailNet, they may be able to help. LOTS of older A4s still running. Where are you located? Pirate_Dave -- In article , Kevin wrote: I'm a newbie sailor.
