I've been completely disgusted (and mostly burned out) with the
computer industry lately. I've been programming for 15 years and for the sake of my sanity, I've been considering jobs in other fields. Maybe carpentry or maybe even boat building. The problem is, I have very little experience with either, aside from my personal boat building projects at a beginner level. I was thinking maybe I could try for some menial entry level job (helping move and set up equipment, etc) and eventually gain enough experience to make a reasonable salary. The question is: Is this even likely? Are there many jobs out there for boat builders in Florida? I'm married with kids, so I have to think of them too... ie: I need enough $ to keep them fed. Any career advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks Tom |

Since your family's welfare is at stake, why switch dramatically to a
career that may not provide you with the money you need? Just work a little less at your real job and build a boat on the side to gain some experience. There is a wealth of information out there that deals with building boats. Even better, since you mention you have very little experience building anything, how do you know you even have an aptitude for it? Try some simple project first, like building a box to put your kids toys in. Or better yet, since you already have an income, how about helping others by donating some time...like here for instance... http://www.habitat.org/ SteveJ mykrowyre wrote: I've been completely disgusted (and mostly burned out) with the computer industry lately. At the moment your frustration with programming may be causing you to view
other options through rose-tinted glasses. As others have pointed out, taking a minimum-wage job in a field you don't know much about, doing tasks you have little experience in, probably isn't a recipe for success. Why not move laterally away from what you are doing -- perhaps, if you like boating, develop some software for use by boaters, boat builders, boat surveyers, marina operators or whatever. That builds on a skill you already have, and makes your expertise very valuable to others. You may make less than you do now, but certainly more than you'd make picking up work as available at minimum wage, which is what a boat yard would probably pay you as a laborer. Also, you could start your "new career" on an after-work basis, to test the market. You may find that you are so excited about your moonlighting activities that your day job is no longer so frustrating. "mykrowyre" wrote in message om... Common lumber, ring nails. Abused it for 10 years, then used it as a plug for a glass copy which I sold after a further ten years, for costs. I would buy another tomorrow.
