I am contemplating making a small boat sail out of a piece of Tyvek
housewrap I have on hand. The material I have is not the tough random fibre Tyvek of postal envelope fame, but what appears to be a lower grade woven pattern in two laminates which can be separated easily. I can find information online about how to make Tyvek sails but no follow up on how the sails perform or on how long they last. I'd like to hear, if avialable, comments on ... - how long Tyvek lasts as a sail - if Tyvek sails perform differently, stretch and so forth. I plan to cut the edges to give the sail some shape, using the usual measurements, and wonder if that's applicable to Tyvek. (I've used the sprit sail info I gathered over the years and put in the file under Boats on my website). - how well the double-sided carpet tape holds and lasts - if it would be better, or even possbile, to use a sewing machine - if the printing can be removed ![]() - anything special about folding and storing when not in use and any other helpful info -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ William R Watt National Capital FreeNet Ottawa's free community network homepage: www.ncf.ca/~ag384/top.htm warning: non-freenet email must have "notspam" in subject or it's returned |
