How to build ice box?
There are several books. Calder's book is good but more about theory
and building the whole system. Richard Coleman has an excelent down to earth book on DIY yacht refrigeration but it is more on building the entire system, maintaining and servicing it. Weems & Plath publishes (or did at one time) a good basic book on box construction called "The Perfect Box: 39 ways to improve your boat's ice box." Lot of good basic information on materials and methods and very little on the refrigeration mechanics. How to build ice box?
Yttr,
Daniel Spurr's "Upgrading the Cruising Sailboat" has a good detailed description for building an ice box using 4 inches of urethane foam. When I built my 32 Traveler interior I followed this and the box came out nice, but small. If I were to do it again, especially with refrigeration, I'd use 2 inches of foam. The book "Upgrading the Cruising Sailboat" is well worth the cost for anyone working on an old boat, lots of good info. My copy is from 1983. Another good book is "This Old Boat". My copy was borrowed about 10 years ago! If you want I can scan the section on ice boxes and send to you directly. MMC "Ytter" wrote in message . .. How to build ice box?
I think Nigel Calder's new "Cruising Handbook" has a section on building a
good box. His other book that is specifically on refrigeration is good for refrigeration mechanics. Ferenc Mate may also discuss building an box in "Finely Fitted Yacht" but I'm not sure. I would consider vacuum panels if building from scratch. "Ytter" wrote in message . .. If you are planning 12 volt refrigeration see the slide show on my web
site " What Works and What Does not" There is now a technical Forum also on my web site at; http://www.kollmann-marine.com Much of the information for my books on boat refrigeration comes from repairing systems and answering E mail questions about mobile refrigeration. Every five years I have updated these books from the information collected. As technical books need to be revised more often than five years, my web site helps keep technical information on refrigeration up dated. I hope this new Refrigeration Forum will help with the exchange of current information about refrigeration and problem solving. "Ytter" wrote in message ... Hey Richard. Have you seen this? http://www.avxcel.com/tropikool.html
Looks like it has potential because the technology has been used for a long time in spot cooling IR telescopes and space vehicles. Main thing they have done is add a CO2 heat pipe to distribute the cooling but when I called they could not give me any COPE, BTU/hr or other hard facts. Probably not ready for prime time but looks interesting. But they do allow you to get to a much lower temperature. Fewer parts most likely though, and (possibly) quieter operation. But that's pure supposition. How to build ice box?
Glen, Interesting claims and a nice internet web site. R and D today
must mean go out there and find something, then let the consumer see if it will work in his application. As I have posted before I hope the new product meets the test. The boaters that ask me for recommendations are normally blue water cruisers and they need equipment that has proven reliability in a marine application. To pass my test the components used must have exceeded 100,000 accumulative hours and the failure rate must not to exceed 0.5 per one thousand hours in a marine aplication.
