Default What guage wire??

I want to install my battery in the bow of my 16 foot skiff. The
battery will power the starter for a 25 horse electric start evinrude.
The total cable length will be 18 feet, no breaks. What guage wire do
I need to use, do I need to use something as big as a car like 4
guage, or can I use 8?? How many amps does a typical 25 horse draw?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just Wait

If you are looking for conformation that you can do the job on the
cheap by using small wire, look elsewhere.

#2AWG will do the job correctly.

Why would you say that?? I never said anything about cheap. I go out
with three frekin' motors including the trolling thruster, I don't
cheap out on my boating.

Thank you, I solved my problem btw. I bought a good set of 12 foot
jumper cables and modified the handles of the clips so I did not have
to worry about crimping. Obviously I am not going to put the battery
as far forward as I initially intended. but it will make little
difference other than readjusting storage space.

It will do the job but it's way overkill on a 25 hp motor.

Just a followup. I ended up with 8 guage jumper wires, reworked as
noted above. Most times I am still starting with the rope cold anyway.
I tried a set of 2 guage jumper cables with a brandy new interstate
"Marine Starting" battery from Sears and it did exactly the same thing
as with the smaller, although marine too, battery and the 8 guage
cables so I took the big battery back after doing a load test on the
smaller one just to be sure. Still going to need to remove and rebuild
the starter this winter, only problem is when as we boat pretty much
all season as long as there is not too much ice on the river
