I want to install my battery in the bow of my 16 foot skiff. The
battery will power the starter for a 25 horse electric start evinrude. The total cable length will be 18 feet, no breaks. What guage wire do I need to use, do I need to use something as big as a car like 4 guage, or can I use 8?? How many amps does a typical 25 horse draw? Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you are looking for conformation that you can do the job on the cheap by using small wire, look elsewhere. #2AWG will do the job correctly. Lew |

I go out with three frekin' motors including the trolling thruster, I don't cheap out on my boating. #2AWG will do the job correctly. Thank you, I solved my problem btw. I bought a good set of 12 foot jumper cables and modified the handles of the clips so I did not have to worry about crimping. Obviously I am not going to put the battery as far forward as I initially intended. but it will make little difference other than readjusting storage space. Lew |

I ended up with 8 guage jumper wires, reworked as noted above. Most times I am still starting with the rope cold anyway. I tried a set of 2 guage jumper cables with a brandy new interstate "Marine Starting" battery from Sears and it did exactly the same thing as with the smaller, although marine too, battery and the 8 guage cables so I took the big battery back after doing a load test on the smaller one just to be sure. Still going to need to remove and rebuild the starter this winter, only problem is when as we boat pretty much all season as long as there is not too much ice on the river ![]() |

I use eight ga for a five horse electric motor[or a drier,or a stove]. I don't see more than a one half[1] horse starter on a 25 hp engine. I used to hand start one of those 25 evinrudes. It had no starter, just a handle you pulled. It wouldn't work with the battery near the engine? I suppose there is some trim issue. There _is_ a trim adjustment on the motor. I would avoid the long cables if I could, every thing they do by being longer is bad: cost, weight, voltage drop, energy waste. It would not be out of the question to take the engine to an auto electrical shop and have them measure the cranking current. Did you try asking the Evinrude people? Or a dealer's mechanic. 1. About the same current as a five horse AC moter. Casady |
