Yeah mate! Illustates the advantages of a fullish keel over a bulb on a fin.

Been a few fin keels fall off boats in Aussie and Southern Ocean waters in
recent years!!

Seriously though, the TV interviews of the skipper and crew were
excruciating to watch...all the squirming, weaseling and plain stonewalling.
Suspect all of them will be looking for a new job shortly.

Well, while I feel sorry for the skipper...somewhat...you can bet I
sent that link to every sailor I know.

I mean, really...running aground in front of the Sydney Opera House?

I presume Sydney Harbour is charted extensively...

===================================

Sailors have the misfortune to be cruising around with a lot of boat
in the water, sometimes more boat than water. And then there's the
jumping rock phenomenon which pops up every now and then. Don't
laugh, I've seen it happen, almost everyone has.

I'll agree that it's amazing! I just spent an hour or so going through
your site and all that I can say is WOW! Way more than I could ever take
on. Keep up the great work!

The British paper probably got more press coverage with this than if the boat
had just continued on sailing around with no troubles.

At least that's what I would tell them if I was the skipper. :-)

I wonder if Spirit has/had a sacrificial keel. You know, one that is
designed to rip off in the event of a collision without damaging the
hull?

There can be major surges near the steps caused by ferries close to
the vicinity. Obviously caught the crew unaware!
