How to make/macrame/whip sailboat steering wheel cover?
How to make/macrame/whip sailboat steering wheel cover?
I would like to cover the steel steering wheel on my Hunter 30'. My preference is to macrame line on the wheel and spokes. I've done some searching on the net for instructions, but I haven't found any. If you have some references or pointers, I would be appreciative. Thanks, Buddy E |

Two very simple variations: One with a straight ridge on the outside edge of the wheel is to use two ropes, and tie overhand knots in opposite directions, changing rope every second turn. The other makes a spiral, and is just a single rope tied with overhand knots in the same direction allthe way. For both, tighten up each knot backward, against the tying direction. Of course, "Ashley's book of Knots" is the ultimat bible on the subject. -- Dag. |

Bud,
Be sure you want to do this. The wrap gets dirty and is not easy to clean. It is not hard to do, but start by heading out to the nearest chadler that serves the fishing fleet and get a roll of twine and a couple of shuttles. Far faster than whipping the wheel would be lacing a leather sportscar
wheel cover on. If the wheel is large, you might need more than one cover, naturally. I would like to cover the steel steering wheel on my Hunter 30'. snip I did this once using 3/16" dia, Dacron clothsline (Nylon would get hard), for the wheel on my 30 ft boat. Started with at least 200 ft in one piece. Simply wrapped the wheel in one continuous wrap. Finished with a wrap and a King Knot on the king spoke. The remaining spokes were naked. It worked for me. It also took a while. Lew |

Wife did it for our 48" wheel on 37' boat. Took something like 350 feet
of 1/8" Dacron. Every round has a half hitch offset from the one before and these spiral around the wheel giving a really secure grip and pleasing appearance. She finished it off with a plain knot covered with a piece of leather laced on at the king spoke position. You can feel where the wheel is in the dark. She did the same thing to exposed cables and hoses. |
