Olive wants to go to the Caribbean !
Olive (her last name actually means olive tree :-) wants to sail to the Caribbean before crossing the Pacific. So maybe we're going to do this in 2007. Should we plan on spending at least a year for this trip ? How about 4 months to get from California to the Caribbean, 4 months in the Caribbean (January to April) and 4 months (or longer) to get back ? |

Then plan for a 2-3 years there. No need to rush. Why would you want to go back to CA before heading out to the S. Pacific? Check out my web site for tons of info on the area: http://www.GeoffSchultz.org/ -- Geoff (who's headed back to Honduras in a month) Very nice web site. I was thinking that we should get out of the Caribbean before the hurricane season begins in June. But since the best time to leave for South Pacific is between March and May we may want to return to California and do some traveling in my motor home. |

You're going to spash a new Tayana in Kalifornia, sail the Big Ditch, across the Carib for four months and then reverse the route to the Indian Ocean? What's the rush? That's an itinerary that could take a year or two to really enjoy. One could tack on the Great Circle Route and add another year and never see the same water twice. (There are parts of the ICW that would present draft problems but a little off-shore near the Carolinas would be a welcome side trip.) Tell Olive to chill. It's called cruising not rushing. |

What's the rush? ========================== Exactly. The Carribean would be a nice place to hang out for a year or two while you'n'OliveOyl get your sea legs. The islands are close together and every bit as scenic as those in the Pacific in most cases. People generally take their boats south to Venezuela or Trinidad for the hurricane season. I'd recommend getting it hauled if leaving it there for any length of time. Both are also good places to get work done by all reports, although I have no experience with that. |

Perhaps you may consider reading Jimmy Cornell's book on World Cruising Routes and if that doesn't give you a clue on which way to proceed, then I would suggest a 747 to Port de France and charter a boat for a month or so. |
