Happy 2007 Some folks I know tend to like Charter. http://www.charterworld.com/ See what you think. Mr. B, two decades ago, my wife and I went to Greece in April. I had no plans for a charter other than the money to pay for a boat and dreams. Because it was early in the season it was a buyers market and I went to Piraeus and in one day hired a boat and captain. If you go, four thoughts. 1. Get a captain who speaks your language and Greek. Some of the Islands we found had no English speaking folks where we wanted them. We liked the guy we went with and he helped me pick out my next boat. 2. Its a big sea. I had plans to make to Santorini in a round trip week trip. In my dreams. 3. Beware the Meltemis. They are real. One of my favorite stories was the fight our captain and I had about going out to make Mykonos one morning and I lost. A larger ketch with a properly outfitted German crew set out and after getting battered gave up and came back to Kea while we rested and saw the entire Island and had a great but thankfully mysterious dinner and we raced them to Mykonos the next day. 4. Have fun. There is nothing like sailing beneath the temple at Cape Souninon (sic), walking on Delos, eating olive oiled foods and drinking greek wines and ouzo. Most fun I have had. harlan -- To respond, obviously drop the "nospan"? |

Bien, mais on veut rendre visite au sud de France... I have never chartered in the south of France, so cannot recommend anyone, and the charterers I have used and could recommend (setsail.co.uk, Sunsail) do not go there - probably because it is notoriously expensive and crowded in peak season. I see Moorings charters from Nice, but I have no experience of them. If you can man manage French, you could ask for recommendations on the newsgroup fr.rec.bateaux - though it is not a subject I have seen covered there much. You could also ask in uk.rec.sailing where there may be folk who have chartered in the western med. HTH Dave -- (Remove any numerics from my email address.) |

I don't know where you're travelling from, or why you've chosen France, so it's not easy to give immediate advice. However, for sailboats and motor boats going to sea, there are very few charter companies operating in the south of France. The main reason is that the area is very crowded and very expensive in the high season, and in the winter is prone to a very vicous wind - the mistral - which blows for days at a time with little warning of its onset. One possibility is canal boat charter - for the waterways around Marseilles - but since this is a cruising forum, I guess that's not your thing. So my suggestion is that you choose another area! Probably Greece. And Harlan Lachman's advice for skippered charter in Greece, and places to go to, is absolutely spot on. If you want to see comparisons of the better cruising areas of Europe (with lots of detail on N Spain, Greece and the Baltic) to help your choice of cruise area, try my website. It's in my signature. Sorry, Turkey is not yet included . . . gimme a month. And for advice on who to charter from in Greece, try http://www.sailingissues.com/greek.html . Great advice here. -- JimB http://www.jimbaerselman.f2s.com/ Comparing cruise areas within Europe, with lots of detail about the favourites. |
