Greetings:
I am exploring the idea of traveling to Cuba by boat (someone else's) in January. I have a legit educational research grant and can travel there freely (I'm setting up a study abroad program for Criminal Justice students at University of Delaware). Being a boater with lots of experience around the Lower Keys (particularly Key West), I'd REALLY prefer my first experience in Cuba to be via water than flying from (yuck!) New York. I'd appreciate a contact from anyone planning to spend January in Hemmingway Harbor that might be interested in having a mate aboard. In brief: - I can supply references as to boating experience (I hold a 50 ton USCG Master's license -inland -. http://www.elkrivertours.com) and personal integrity (e.g., I'm far too old and tired to be involved in risky behavior of any kind beyond the "occasional" scotch and water). - I don't know a sail from a Kleenex, but am good at doing what I'm told. - Five submarine patrols in the 1960's taught me how to get along with others aboard (e.g., keep to myself and shut up) - I can pay my own way, but want to conserve limited grant money for future short trips when I may have to waste it on plane fare. - I am properly checked out on using mops, swaps, rags, and other high tech cleaning equipment and don't mind doing it. I can cook about two notches above grilled cheese sandwiches and tuna fish salad. - I am a reasonably competent mechanic/handyman. Should anyone be aware of someone planning to cruise to Cuba that might be interested in having a paunchy professor aboard during all or part of January, I'd appreciate a reply. Better check, last week, U.S. administration cancelled most special condition
permits. I'm not sure of the cut-off dates but call State Dept. for details. |

I think you are right. The Dubya cut back on most cultural and research
permits, especially for teachers, artist and researchers who tend to be Democrats, at the same time that he freed up travel rules for Cuban Americans. Yeah, isn't that squirrelly. It's a way to funnel financing to those who would be favorable to the agenda of the current administration...get 'em funded, and up and ready when Tio Fidel carcs it. -- "That's not a lie, it's a terminological inexactitude. The prohibitions apply to just about all groups who might earlier have obtained a travel license, not just art or knowledge workers. My wife traveled to Cuba last December with group of legal professionals who, as far as I could see, pretty much spanned the political spectrum as we know it. The only thing they really had in common was a desire to enjoy mohitos. -- Good luck and good sailing. s/v Kerry Deare of Barnegat http://kerrydeare.tripod.com |

The so-called "policy" on Cuba is administered by the Treasury Department through its Office of Foreign Assets Control. FWIW, here is a guy, Bush, who has no problem currying favor with known felons in the business and financial worlds, while at the same time turning the big guns on an essentially harmless control freak on a small nearby island. Is his brother up for re-election soon? -- Good luck and good sailing. s/v Kerry Deare of Barnegat http://kerrydeare.tripod.com |
