I Have sent this to Garmin today:
About 12 days ago, on Feb-19 I have sent a report to this support group regarding a serious problem with the GpsMap 276C, related to NMEA being stopped every day between 00:00 GMT and 00:08 GMT, but as I do have not received ANY response from Garmin, I am re-stating the problem. This problem was detected by a friend on his GpsMap 172C and tested and reproduced in several 276C here. Follow the report already sent 12 days befo a)The 276C was sending NMEA messages normally until 20:59:59 LCL (23:59:59 GMT) after that, it begin to send invalid NMEA messages, and little time after, stopped sending anything. b)Around 21:08:33 LCL (00:08:33 GMT) the 276C started to send NMEA messages normally. Sample: $GPVTG,192.2,T,215.2,M,0.0,N,0.0,K,A*2F $GPXTE,A,A,0.04,L,N,A*07 $GPAPB,A,A,0.04,L,N,V,V,8.6,M,BA01,1.4,M,1.4,M,A*5 E ================ 23:59:59 GMT $GPRMC,000002,V,,,,,,,,,,N*51 $GPRMB,V,,,,,,,,,,,,,N*52 $GPRMC,000158,V,,,,,,,,,,N*5F $GPRMB,V,,,,,,,,,,,,,N*52 ============== 00:08:33 GMT $GPRMC,000833,A,1248.705,S,03827.579,W,0.0,192.2,1 90207,23.0,W,A*32 $GPRMB,A,0.04,L,AIC,BA01,1248.413,S,03827.698,W,0. 315,338.3,,V,A*3B Considerations: 1) The problem happens Every Day at that time on every place around the world but we don’t know if happens at another time. 2) It is comproved in garmins 172C and 276C. We dont know what other models have this problem. 3) I repute this problem as a very high risk if people does not know about it. Many mariners like me and the majority of my friends have Garmin Gps units interfaced with Autopilots specially when sailing tricky routes, in narrow channels, in bad weather or at night. 4) This problem turns the interface inoperable (Raymarine autopilots says "No Data" and ring the bell..) but nobody, including me, knowed what was the cause of this behaviour until now. I ask for a response ASAP from this support group.. Thanks Pascal 01/03/2007 |

Thank you very much for posting this. It's the kind of little glitch that
could kill a boat. It's also an excellent illustration of why you should have a secondary source of situational awareness always engaged. Would you or someone else please post a description of a way, if there is one, to get a computer to read and record the NEMA sentences as you did? I would like to try this with my 76Cx. If many of us start bombarding Garmin with similar results, they are more likely to do something. -- Roger Long |

It only holds 500 lines in the buffer so thats only about 8 minutes of data but you can "capture text" from the screen for as long as you would like as far as I know. I didn't test it. |

Thanks, I would appreciate that.
Sorry for the blank reply. I've sent out several this morning. The laptop I was using at home has developed a super sensitve touch pad. Is this a program you wrote or is it in the public domain? If so, is there a link where others could get it? I would post it on my web site because lots of us are sitting around snowbound and it would be interesting for several people to investigate the data drop out. I've never used Hyperterminal and forgotten what it is so any use pointers you could include would be appreciated. The spooky thing about this bug for those of us on the US east coast is that the problem would pop up in the evening when it's dark, we're tired and sunburned, and most likely to be making our way up a channel to anchor somewhere. -- Roger Long |

I'm posting this here in case you don't get them. Let me know if they work for you. |
