What is a useful tv-satellite dish on board?

Usually we can aim it at a new dock by looking at the other sat-dishes in the marina and seeing which way they are pointing. You must have an older FMTV. The newer ones come with a "find" button. Whenever I move the boat, I just hit that button at the new dock and the dish automatically points itself correctly. |

We got the FM in 2001, so maybe that is true. I think it cost about $800.00. But we don't use the FM (follow me) at the dock. It isn't needed, so why use the electricity? Plus it makes another step in getting underway. Because on our boat, the follow-me is on the scuba bottle box on the aft deck (center cockpit boat), and when we are underway, the dish itself is stored down lower on the box so as not to interfere with the boom. We have to mount the dish before we can aim it. Sometimes when the dish is mounted on the FM, the direction that the dish has to point puts it going right through the boom (which does NOT work although it seems to go through sports fishers or big power boats in the next slip without any problem) so the dish has to be mounted somewhere else and in those cases, we usually just leave it where it is stored. |
