Anyone know where to get good heavy weather instruction and experience?
I'm not aware of any classes that do that - they'd probably have
some trouble getting liability insurance. I would suggest hooking up with someone doing some offshore racing. You'll get experience and when the going gets tough, you'll have a big group of people to deal with the problems. The key is hooking up with an experienced crew. Matt "Wayne" wrote in message ... Does anyone know where to find good solid instruction with hands on experience in sailing in heavy weather? I would like to find an experiential course where I will get instruction and actual experience in dealing with storms and weather that is worse than I am likely to encounter on my own. Thanks for any suggestions, Wayne Remove the "NOSPAM" in the email address. |

Sounds like you want to do a Bermuda race or perhaps the rally down to the BVI. They seem to get weather often enough. -- Jere Lull Xan-a-Deux ('73 Tanzer 28 #4 out of Tolchester, MD) Xan's Pages: http://members.dca.net/jerelull/X-Main.html Our BVI FAQs (290+ pics) http://homepage.mac.com/jerelull/BVI/ |

My interest is in being safe while cruising, and becoming a little less apprehensive about going offshore. Wayne Well, if you're fit enough, join a delivery crew and offer to pay your way. You are much more likely to convince a delivery skipper to take you if you have special skills such as navigation, engines, watch-standing or cooking. 62 can be tennis-playing age, or half-dead. A good skipper will know. If you bring skills to the table, he/she may pay you...as well as teach. R. |
