The fuel injection system on my diesel volvo penta motor is leaking
small amounts of gasoil (a drop every couple of hours). The leak is located on the side of the fuel injection pump, exactly where the cover and two nuts are located. The question I have is wheather to take the motor to the service, or do the maintenance myself. Would it be too dificult for me to unscrew the nuts and replace the gaskets myself? Would I encounter possible difficulties beyond my basic level of expertise? I have done some maintenance in the past, but nothing major. Thanks Al |

You should get better advice than you will find here. On my Yanmar, the basic injection timing of the engine is controlled and adjusted by the thickness of the gasket under the injection pump. The gasket can not be replaced without going through the whole retiming process. I think this is typical but I am not familiar with the Volvo. You probably could check the tightness of the nuts and see if they will take up a little. If the timing is adjusted by the gasket, it will be a precisly machined metal shim that you can't overcompress. You might try: www.boatdiesel.com $25.00 a year for full access but they have manufacturer specific FAQ's and forums and you can probably find an answer there. -- Roger Long Thanks, I think I better follow your advise.
